The Best Breeds for First Time Bird Owners

Before getting a bird, you first have to decide on what type to get! Many first time bird owners want a big parrot, one that talks.  This, however, is not the best idea.  Bigger birds should be left to those who have experience with pet birds, successful experience.  For first time bird owners, the cockatiel is recommended.  Cockatiels are wonderful little birds and often have the big bird personality in a small package.  They are not too small either.  They make good pet birds in homes with older children (over the age of 6).  Budgies are good pet birds for first time bird owners; however they may be difficult with young children.  The American strain of Budgies is very small and can be very nervous and flighty.  They can be more difficult for a child to handle.  There is an English Budgie that has a bit more size to it and may work out better. Love Birds can make good birds for a first time bird owner; however they do require a bit more work to get them to be tame and used to their owner.  They can be a bit more hard headed.  The common misconception that they need to be in pairs is misleading as this will only cause the birds to bond to each other and will make for a very difficult bird to tame. Remember, just because a bird is a small or cheap bird, does not mean that it does not require the same quality of care as a larger bird.
