Birds as Pets Pet birds are a wonderful addition to the family, for the right person. Before adding a bird to the family, extensive research should be done on the care required, cost, housing, what breed is best, and where to purchase. Every bird deserves the best possible care. This takes time, money and effort. It is only fair to the bird, and you, that an honest decision be made as to whether or not you are ready for this commitment. Your avian veterinarian is an excellent resource for giving you the information needed to make the decision on whether or not you are ready for a pet bird. Locate breeders of types of birds you think you might like and ask them lots of questions about personalities, noise level, feeding, housing, diseases, and anything else you might think of. A good breeder should be very willing to answer all of your questions and should also ask you questions as well, to be sure you are ready for the commitment. There are a lot of wonderful breeds of birds out there in the pet trade. Some for the more advanced bird owner, and then there are others that are more suitable for the beginner. When considering a bird as a pet, you have to really look at yourself and figure out if you are really cut out for a pet bird. Birds take a lot of time, effort, and space. They can wreak havoc on your home and your lifestyle. They can cost a lot of money, for the bird itself as well as routine care and vet visits. They aren’t the type of pet that you can just fill up the food bowl every day and leave. Most birds require companionship of the caretaker for hours a day. Food needs to be prepared for them every day. They need their cages cleaned every day. The will need a place outside of their cage where they can spend time with their families. There are many dangers in the household for a bird that you may not think about otherwise. They can be loud, demanding, and mischievous. Many birds live for many, many, many years and it’s not fair to the bird to rehome it if you’ve realized after the purchase that you aren’t cut out for him or her. They are a lifetime commitment
