Preventive Care & Annual Vaccines

The best way to keep your pet healthy is with routine wellness visits and preventive care. It is always best to prevent illness, if able, than to treat once your pet is sick. This is why Dr. Logue recommends wellness visits every six months and vaccinations every year. A typical wellness visit will include a thorough physical exam (we like to say "nose to tail"), a fecal examination, vaccinations, possible labwork, and preventive medication against heartworms, fleas, and ticks.

Physical Exam

Although a physical exam can't tell us everything, it does give us much needed information on the health of your pet. During an exam, every part of your pets body will be examined, palpated (felt), or listened to. This information, along with your pets history provided by you, is used by our veterinarians to determine the overall health of your pet.
If any abnormalities are found during the physical exam, our vets may recommend further testing to help diagnose and/or treat your pet. This could include blood work, urinalysis, radiographs, ultrasound, hospitalization, medications, or even a referral to a speacialist. Some of these tests may also become "routine" for some pets, as they help monitor certain illnesses and diseases once diagnosed.

Annual Vaccinations

Every pet should receive vaccinations at least once a year. There can be variations to each individual pets vaccination protocol depending on overall health, age, lifestyle, and/or area of residence. However; the basic protocol is a series of vaccinations every 3 weeks for puppies and kittens until they are 12 weeks of age, and then booster vaccinations once yearly for adult dogs and cats.
Canine Vaccines
  • DHLPPC - Also referred to as the Distemper vaccine; it is actually several vaccines combined into one. There can be some variations in each dogs vaccination, however most will vaccinate against these viruses: Canine Distemper, Adenovirus, Leptospirosis, Parainfluenza, Parvovirus, and Coronavirus.
  • Rabies - Always fatal if contracted, Rabies is easily prevented with vaccination.
  • Bordetella - Also referred to as the "Kennel Cough " vaccine, this vaccination is usually required for your dog to be groomed, stay at a boarding facility, or play in a designated Dog Park.
  • Lyme - Transmitted by ticks, the need for the Lyme vaccine will vary with different regions in the U.S. Your veterinarian will help you determine if the Lyme vaccination is needed as part of your dogs yearly vaccines.
Feline Vaccines
  • FVRCPC - This is known and referred to as the Distemper vaccine even though it is vaccinating against several different feline viruses in one injection. Regardless if your cat "never" goes outside, they should be vaccinated against these viruses: Feline Rhinotracheitis, Calicivirus, Panleukopenia, and Chlamydia.
  • Rabies - Always fatal if contracted, Rabies is easily prevented with vaccination.
  • FeLV (Feline Leukemia)- Cats must have a negative test result prior to receiving the Feline Leukemia vaccine. Although there is no cure if your cat is positive, they can still live a long and happy life with the help of your veterinarian.

Preventive Care

Ever hear the old saying, "An ounce of prevention is a pound of cure"? There is a lot of truth in that saying! Not only is it better for your pets health to prevent illness and disease, in most cases, it is also less expensive. The most common preventive care, second to vaccinating, is monthly Heartworm, Intestinal Parasite, Flea, and Tick  Preventions. These medications are given to your pet every month to protect them against both internal and external parasites. There are many different types of these preventions, so it is best to speak with your veterinarian to decide which is best for your pet.
