Canine respiratory illness
With all the news channels talking about the "mysterious canine respiratory illness", we would like to provide some information to our clients.
Quick Facts
- There have been some cases reported in Indiana, although we have not seen any here in Richmond.
- It is not known at this time if the illness is caused by a virus or bacteria.
- As with most illnesses, pets at a greater risk are the very young or elderly, not vaccinated, and/or pets that have a compromised immune system.
- At this time, since the cause is unknown, there is no test.
- Symptoms are very similar to other respiratory illnesses and include a persistent cough, nasal discharge, and sneezing. There have been reports that these symptoms have developed into pneumonia in some dogs.
- Treatment will vary with each dog. Again, since the cause is unknown, treatment will be determined by the veterinarians physical exam and the symptoms the dog is experiencing.
What you can do
- Make sure you dog is current on all recommended respiratory vaccines, Distemper (DHPPC), Bordetella, and Canine Flu.
- Avoid contact with unvaccinated dogs.
- Limit exposure to areas with frequent dog visitors like dog parks, groomers, and/or boarding kennels.
- Contact your veterinarian if you have questions and/or concerns.
